“I’ve discovered the secrets of the pyramids.”–Edward LeedskalninCoral Castle has been called America’s Stonehenge. It was carved, hailed shaped and built by Edward Leedskalnin, a man who stood just 5 feet tall and weighed perhaps 100 pounds. Yet he was able to create this astonishing monument to his lost love all by himself.
Ed spent 28 years building the 1100 ton structure. He moved it once when he found the location not to his liking. He worked at night, and all alone. He had no instrument, machines or heavy equipment to work with.
How was this tiny ,an able to create a castle out of the hardest form of coral known? How did he move 12 ton blocks without any mechanical help? This is one of the great enigmas of Florida, and well worth a visit.
Coral Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It is located on 28655 South Dixie Highway Miami, FL 33033.
Florida has many great features to offer. I’ll do more reports after we have returned. For now, here’s a hint of what’s in store for you readers.
